Chancellor Hawgood recently shared UCSF’s plan to optimize onsite and remote work. As we move forward, we want to take this opportunity to reinforce our commitment to UCSF’s guiding principles and emphasize the importance of this transition.

Why This Matters

Our work is fundamentally rooted in relationships—between faculty and learners, investigators and lab groups, and teams across our institution. Collaboration, mentorship, and scientific exchange thrive when we are together. An onsite presence is essential to sustaining and building upon our excellence.

Guiding Principles

The following principles will guide our decision-making:

  • Equity and Collaboration: Decisions about onsite work must be fair and based on operational needs. Onsite schedules should balance team requirements and individual contributions.
  • Transparent Communication: Ensure clear communication within your units, fostering understanding and alignment with UCSF’s mission.
  • Commitment to Responsible Utilization of Resources: Predictable onsite work improves space use, parking, and transportation planning, supporting UCSF’s broader impact on the region.

Next Steps

Many faculty and staff are already working onsite full time. For the rest of our community, we will create a thoughtful, equitable plan. Over the coming months, we will:

  • Engage in a consultative process to determine how this transition will impact the School of Medicine.
  • Finalize a plan by the end of June 2025.
  • Implement changes by September 2025.

Additionally, we will provide opportunities for feedback to the broader community before any decisions are finalized. For ongoing updates, including communications, presentations, and FAQs, please visit this site.

We deeply appreciate your contributions to supporting our collective missions of education, research, clinical care, and community service.
