Bridge Funding Overview
- An outline of the application process and additional information is available at the SOM Dean's Office Bridge Funding website.
- The Dean’s Office provides bridge funding as a reimbursement of costs incurred up to 75% of the award amount (the remaining 25% of the award amount is provided from the recipient’s department).
- Funding is intended to be pro-rated on a semi-annual basis, i.e., the recipient is eligible for 37.5% of the reimbursement at 6 months and the remaining 37.5% at the end of the award period.
- If the recipient establishes funding from other sources during the award period, the eligible reimbursement amount is reduced accordingly.
- Awardees should work with their department on the 25% funding from the department.
Discretionary Funds
Important note: If the recipient currently has discretionary funds, a condition of the bridge award is that the recipient must spend their discretionary funds (to a maximum of $60,000) before bridge funding award may be used.
Changes to Eligibility
If the bridge funding recipient establishes funding from ANY other source (e.g. extramural, intramural, industry, and foundation awards, startup, gifts, discretionary funds such as an endowed chair, etc.) to support their research portfolio, regardless of the research project it supports, the recipient must notify:
David Morgan ([email protected]) and Tina Sexton ([email protected]) within two weeks of receiving funding notice.
- If the new award is larger than the balance of the bridge funding grant, then bridge funding will be terminated as of the new award start date. (Payroll changes should be made in advance to ensure posting to the correct fund at month-end).
- If the new award is less than the balance of the bridge funding grant, then the balance will be reduced accordingly.
Requests for exceptions to this policy must be sent to Tina Sexton ([email protected] ) within the two-week time frame and include a detailed justification for why the bridge funding award should not be terminated or reduced. Requests will be reviewed closely by program leadership.

- All requests for reimbursement must be made no later than two months after the end of the award period.
