Announcing Michelle Mourad, MD as Acting Chair of the UCSF Department of Medicine
Michelle Mourad, MD will assume the role of Acting Chair of the UCSF Department of Medicine, effective June 9, 2025, as Bob Wachter, MD will be on academic leave to complete a new book on AI and healthcare through September 30, 2025.
Dr. Mourad completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Hospital Medicine at UCSF prior to starting as faculty in 2009. She currently serves as Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Medicine and a Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine – dividing her time between clinical, informatics, and administrative roles.
Clinically, Dr. Mourad attends on both the Medicine Teaching Service and the Goldman Service. Her interests in quality improvement and operations are broad and encompass the areas of transitions in care, throughput, patient and provider satisfaction, reducing costs of care, and using informatics to improve care delivery.
In her role as Vice Chair, Dr. Mourad is responsible for overseeing performance improvement and clinical strategy in all these areas across the continuum of care.
With her deep institutional knowledge, commitment to clinical excellence, and proven leadership in quality improvement and care delivery, Dr. Mourad is exceptionally well-prepared to lead the Department of Medicine during this interim period. She will provide steady, thoughtful guidance in support of our faculty, staff, learners, and patients.
