Dr. Brian Graham

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Brian B. Graham, MD, as Senior Advisor for Space Management and Strategy in the UCSF School of Medicine, effective August 1, 2025. We would like to thank the search committee, chaired by Julie Ann Sosa, MD, MA, FACS, for their work in considering an exceptional pool of candidates for this position.

As Senior Advisor for Space Management and Strategy, Dr. Graham will partner with department chairs, ORU directors, and School of Medicine leadership to:

  • Advance strategic planning for research, education, clinical, and administrative space across UCSF’s sites,
  • Strengthen alignment with the campus-wide Space Committee’s guiding principles,
  • Foster transparent, data-informed decision-making, and
  • Promote equity in space allocation, particularly across UCSF’s distributed campuses.

He brings to this new role deep experience in academic leadership, research space strategy, and collaborative problem-solving across UCSF’s diverse sites.

Dr. Graham currently serves as Professor in Residence and Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG), where he holds the John F. Murray, MD Distinguished Professorship in Pulmonary Medicine. For the past four years, Dr. Graham has served on the Academic Senate Committee on Space (ASCOS) – two years as Vice Chair and two years as Chair – while also serving on the campus-wide Space Committee. In these roles, he has worked closely with department chairs, division chiefs, the Faculty Space Review Committee, and campus leadership to advance data-driven, equitable, and transparent approaches to space allocation and utilization. His leadership has helped address complex space challenges, including the Pride Hall transition at ZSFG, where he partnered with colleagues to optimize space usage and advocate for faculty engagement in decision-making.

In addition to his UCSF service, Dr. Graham is an internationally recognized physician-scientist whose research focuses on the pathogenesis of schistosomiasis-associated pulmonary hypertension, a neglected tropical disease affecting millions worldwide. He has led multi-country collaborations in Brazil, Ethiopia, Zambia, Rwanda, and India, with a strong emphasis on capacity building and equitable authorship. His research is supported by multiple NIH grants, and his work has earned numerous honors, including the Pulmonary Vascular Research Institute Achievement Award (2025) and election as a Fellow of the American Thoracic Society (2024).

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Graham on this well-deserved appointment and in welcoming his leadership as we work to optimize the School of Medicine’s space resources to support our missions in research, education, and patient care.
