Amal Smith Appointed as Associate Dean for Financial Affairs

Amal Smith has been appointed as Associate Dean for Financial Affairs for the School of Medicine, effective April 17, 2017.

Amal comes to UCSF with seventeen years of experience at the UC Office of the President, most recently serving as director of the Business Resource Center, a shared service center for financial operations support. She also worked for ten years as a senior consultant for KPMG Consulting, providing cost consulting services to higher education clients, including UCSF and UCLA. Her experience ranges from business operations to complex data analyses, compliance and reporting.

For the past three years, she has also served as an elected school board trustee, with budgetary oversight of a $39 million K-12 school district. She is a highly collaborative leader who understands the academic environment and is skilled at building consensus and a culture focused on service and excellence.

As associate dean for financial affairs, her responsibilities will include oversight of the school’s financial operations and reporting, financial planning and analysis, business intelligence, and resource stewardship, including audits and compliance. She will supervise the 14-person Financial Affairs unit.

Amal holds an MBA from the University of Southern California and a BA in Psychology from UCLA.
