Increasingly, faculty are being tapped to serve as advisers to trainees (students, residents, etc.) who are embarking on all sorts of interesting and innovative projects, not only in basic and clinical research, but also in areas such as health science education, global health and health care systems. When it works well, this kind of advising can be an incredibly rewarding experience. In this round table discussion that we hope will include participants with a range of experience in project advising experience, we plan to define the critical elements of project planning and to identify a set of best practices for guiding your students through their projects. Many of these practices will also apply to managing your own projects!

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

    • Map the distinct phases in a project and, for each stage, identify key activities that advisers and advisees need to accomplish
    • Outline a reasonable set of actions that an advisor can take to ensure that the project is on track
    • Identify common challenges that emerge in these situations and strategies to overcome them
