Designing Surveys

Faculty:

Patricia O’Sullivan, EdD
Professor, Department of Medicine
Director, Educational Research and Faculty Development

Surveys are frequently used in medical education as part of research and evaluation. While they sound simple, there are many pitfalls in conducting a survey. This session will help identify the issues to consider in preparing surveys. Participants are requested to bring four copies of a 10-question survey that they have designed.

During this session, participants will:

  • Hear a brief lecture covering the topics
  • Review drafts of several different questionnaires
  • Enhance own survey

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Describe conceptual and pragmatic issues in questionnaire and survey design
  • Describe steps to take in instrument design process
  • Analyze strengths and weaknesses of questionnaires
