Building
a Sitemap
A sitemap is useful for a couple of reasons. First, it may help your
users find specific pages and second, it will enhance your ranking in
search engines.
You may use Xenu to build a list of the pages on your site. Xenu will
use the title tag of each page to create the sitemap, so the first thing
you will need to do is be sure that each page has a unique
and descriptive title. Generally the title tag should be the same
as the title on the page.
Once you have updated your page titles, creating the sitemap is a very
quick process.
- If you have not already done so, download
Xenu TM from their website. Install
Xenu and edit preferences. Be sure the Site Map option is checked
in the preferences.
- Run Xenu for
broken links as you usually do. Copy and paste, or type in the URL
of your site.
Note: Be sure that it is written like
this: http://medschool.ucsf.edu/about/index.aspx (be sure to include
"index.aspx").
Xenu will ask you if you would like a report. Click 'yes'.
- At the top of the report there will be link to the sitemap Xenu has
created. Click on the link to view the sitemap links. This will contain
links to all the pages in your site.
(There may also be a few School of Medicine pages that are linked from
the global navigation which you will not want to include in your site's
sitemap. These should be pretty obvious when you see them, but for your
reference, they are listed at the bottom of this tutorial.)
Double check here to be sure that all the links have unique, descriptive
names. You may have to go back to your site to update page titles at
this point and repeat steps 1 and 2 as necessary until you are satisfied
with the look of your sitemap.
- Once you are satisfied with the sitemap links in the Xenu report,
view the source from the Xenu report.

Do a search on 'sitemap' to locate the sitemap in the source code.
- Now follows the trickiest part of creating a sitemap.
Copy the ordered list of URLs. Copy from the <ul> to the </ul>
tags.

Paste this code into the code view of a new page you
have created from your template.
(Delete those URLs which are not a part of your site. You may also decide
to delete the URLs to certain other pages as well, for simplicity's
sake. )
- Save the page as sitemap.aspx, link to it and you are done.
Important: Remember to keep your sitemap
up to date!
