Optimizing
and Saving PowerPoint Presentations to the Web
Optimizing and saving your PowerPoint presentations to the web is an
easy and convenient way to share these presentations with your users.
Uploading PowerPoint presentations as HTML has three advantages
- greatly reduced file size
- user does not need to have PowerPoint installed on their machine
to view the presentation
- straightforward, button-style navigation.
Remove any uneccessary images and animated gifs from your presentation
before posting it to the web.
Additionally, remove heavy background images (the USCF seal for instance)
before you save your presentation to the web.
1. Go to Format > Background. Under Background
fill, click the down arrow.

You may select one of the colors displayed here
or you may choose from the web colors available under More Colors.

2. Choose a color and click Apply to All. This will remove background
images from all the pages and replace them with the color you have selected.
1. Open the presentation or Web page you want to publish to the Web
2. Optimize the presentation.
3. On the File menu, click Save as Web Page (.htm).
4. Click 'Publish'
5. In the File name box, type a name for the Web
page.
- Note:
Remember to use good web naming conventions, ie; no spaces, punctuation
or special characters.
You will almost certainly want to change the name of the file for
publication on the web, since generally these files have long names
which are inappropriate for the web.
- Example:
Too long, does not comply with web conventions:
Monthly Web Worker's Meeting #1.htm
Abbreviated, correctly named:
ww_meeting1.htm
6. In the folder list, select a location for the Web page.
Create a folder within your site dedicated to your online PowerPoint
presentations. If you know you will be publishing more that one PowerPoint
presentation, create a separate folder within your ppt folder for each
presentation.

7. Leave the default options selected, including the checkbox which says:
Open published web page in browser, so that you can QA your pages as you
go.
8. You will probably want to deselect the option which says: Display speaker
notes.
9. To change the Web page title (the text that appears in the title bar
of your Web browser), click Change Title, type the new title in the Page
title box, and then click OK.

10. Click Publish.
11. Test/QA your pages in the broswer, check that the pages look and behave
the way you expect them to.
12. Remember to add a link to your presentation.
13. Push up the modified page, along with all the PowerPoint HTML pages
and test again on Staging before they go live to the public the following
morning at 9AM.
