Visiting Medical Student Program

Applicants applying for a visiting student experience at UCSF must be in good academic standing and actively progressing toward a Doctor of Medicine degree at an affiliated LCME-accredited institution, or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at an affiliated COCA-accredited, AACOM member institution. UCSF is not accepting international students for clinical experiences at this time.

Application Information

The UCSF School of Medicine uses the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) to receive applications from students enrolled at institutions in the U.S. or Puerto Rico that are either LCME-accredited or COCA-accredited and AACOM member Osteopathic institutions. To apply:
  • Complete a VSAS application for your preferred electives and dates, and note that we do have additional institutional requirements posted in VSAS. Only students enrolled at affiliated U.S. or Puerto Rico LCME-accredited and COCA-accredited, AACOM member institutions may use VSAS to submit applications and supporting documentation.
  • Refer to the URL above or contact VSAS at vsas@aamc.org for VSAS information.
  • For UCSF information through VSAS click here. Please contact the specific department to which you are applying if you have questions about your application.

Information for Canadian Applicants

UCSF accepts students from Canadian institutions with which we have a Training Affiliation Agreement (TAA); click here for more information about TAAs.

Canadian visiting students may apply directly through the department ($200.00 per four-week elective processing fee). Due to Department of Homeland Security regulations, there will be a $300 processing fee for Canadian students covering Services to International Students and Scholars. If visa documents are delivered by courier, applicants should expect to pay $25 for this service.

Training Affiliation Agreements for Canadian and Osteopathic Students

UCSF School of Medicine requires an approved Training Affiliation Agreement (TAA) with your home institution to allow for participation in the visiting medical student program. The TAA must be approved prior to application to the visiting medical student program. The Training Affiliation Agreement Report (available here) lists institutions with existing approved affiliation agreements.

If an institution would like to establish a Training Affiliation Agreement with UCSF, requests must be submitted via email by an appropriate home school representative to Liana Crosby, UME Coordinator.  The request should include the following:

  • Official Name of Institution / School of Medicine
  • Location of Institution / School of Medicine
  • Type of Program (ie: MD, DO, MBBS, etc)
  • Length of Program
  • Compelling educational reason to establish agreement
  • Home Representative and/or Institution contact information

UCSF is not accepting international students for clinical experiences at this time.
