Teaching Scholars Program
is an Associate Professor in the UCSF Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative
Care. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Johns Hopkins
University and a Doctor of Medicine degree from University of California,
Los Angeles. He completed a residency in anesthesia and a fellowship
in critical care medicine at UCSF. He is Director of the Center for
Health Care Simulation, an educational program created by the Department
of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care in 2000. The Center uses advanced
simulation technology, including a human patient simulator, in the training
of medical students and residents. His role as director includes administration,
developing and evaluating curriculum, and teaching. His clinical practice
at UCSF Moffitt-Long Hospital includes critical care medicine and anesthesia
for liver transplantation. He currently serves as chair of the School
of Medicine's Essential Core Curriculum Steering Committee. In 2001,
he was selected as a founding member of the UCSF Academy of Medical
Educators, and currently serves as chair of the Academy's Innovations
Funding Committee. In 2003, he was appointed as the Sol Shnider Endowed
Chair for Anesthesia Education.
