is currently in his final year of a Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship
at Children's Hospital and Research Center at Oakland. He received his
Bachelor of Arts in biology and his Master of Arts in Molecular Genetics
at Clark University, after which he participated in behavioral neuroscience
research at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. He obtained
his medical degree (BA, MB, BCh, BAO) at Trinity College in Dublin,
Ireland, then completed a general pediatric residency at Children's
Hospital Los Angeles. Currently Karim is involved in a number of research
projects including investigating biomarkers of infection, clinical predictors
of intracranial injury, a clinical decision rule for identifying children
with bacterial meningitis and a comparison of a small volume breath
actuated nebulizer versus traditional nebulizer in asthmatics. He also
has a genuine interest in medical education and will be a small group
facilitator for the Foundations of Patient Care Course at UCSF beginning
September 2005.
