UCSF Earns Top Rankings for Schools, NIH Funding

classroom

UCSF has once again been named among the nation's best graduate schools by U.S. News & World Report. The School of Nursing is No. 4 overall and No. 1 in the nursing specialties of family nurse practitioner, psychiatric/mental health clinical nursing and adult/medical surgical nursing. The School of Medicine is No. 4 for primary care and No. 5 for research -- the only medical school that ranks in the top five in both categories. The new rankings also include previous assessments of pharmacy schools (the surveys do not rank dental schools) and biology graduate programs, which U.S. News surveys, but not on an annual basis. The School of Pharmacy was No. 1 in the last ranking from 2008, and the biology graduate programs were No. 1 in last year's survey.

UCSF also received more research funds from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) than any other public institution in 2010, and ranked third among all institutions nationwide. UCSF has consistently ranked among the nation’s top institutions in NIH funding for more than a decade, as have each of the schools. In 2010, the School of Nursing ranked first, receiving $9.9 million. The schools of pharmacy and dentistry also ranked first, with $22.6 million and $19.5 million respectively, while the School of Medicine ranked second with $422.1 million.

On Call Greetings from the Dean

I am delighted to start as dean of the UCSF School of Nursing and to transition from referring to the school as "they" to "we." The excellence of the school is a beacon to the profession and academic nursing, and I will do everything in my power to continue and expand upon this tradition.
