140.49: INTRO TO POVERTY MEDICINE

Tier 2.
In this elective, students will explore the social, environmental and medical aspects of the care of the impoverished populations. Included will be community clinics, visits to medical and non-medical service providers and lectures by local experts.
Course Objectives:
1. Introduce students to the unique aspects of providing medical care to impoverished patients. 2. Educate students about some of the medical conditions common in this population. 3. Expose student first hand to various aspects of the life of homeless people, including their housing options, food resources, and other social services.
Common Problems/Diseases:
Students will learn about medical conditions commonly found in the underserved. In addition, students will learn how to address health care issues while taking into account the social context of their patients.
Recommended Text or Reading:
A syllabus with bibliography will be provided on the first day of the course.
Team Composition:
The course will include designated faculty plus enrolled students. Students will also interact with providers working in the community.
