140.01: CLINICAL CLERKSHIP

Tier 1B.
In this introductory clerkship, students have daily,
direct patient contacts in various outpatient dermatology
clinics, providing broad exposure to common dermatologic
problems as well as complex, referral
based dermatologic care. The experience is supplemented by
didactic lectures, web-based learning modules and textbook readings, as well as
presentation of cases to faculty preceptors.
Course Objectives:
Develop familiarity with dermatologic vocabulary.
Learn to recognize and initiate therapy of common
dermatologic disorders. Become cognizant of uncommon
or complicated dermatologic problems that require
specialty care.
Common Problems/Diseases:
Skin cancers, including basal and squamous cell
carcinomas and melanoma. Inflammatory skin diseases,
including atopic and contact dermatitis and psoriasis.
Infections and infestations of the skin. Diseases
affecting skin appendages, such as acne and alopecia.
Benign tumors, such as melanocytic nevi, seborrheic
keratoses, and common birthmarks. Skin involvement
in systemic disease, such as HIV infection and lupus
erythematosis.

Lookingbill and Marks, Principles of Dermatology.

Team Composition:
In clinics, students are supervised by faculty attendings
and dermatology residents and fellows. During their
elective, students meet with their faculty preceptor for
one or more case presentation conferences.
Call Schedule/Weekends:
No night or weekend call.

140.06: PHOTOTHERAPY AND PSORIASIS THERAPY

Clinical experience in the treatment of psoriasis, eczema and other skin disorders including phototherapy, Goekerman therapy and combined use of topical, photo and systemic therapies. There is an opportunity for an independent research project possibly leading to publication.

140.07: CLINICAL CLERKSHIP

Elective in one of the following areas: pediatric dermatology; dermatology surgery; collagen-vascular and wound healing; cutaneous oncology; contact dermatitis/cutaneous pharm; HIV/SFGH; hair disease; and dermatopathology. 50% clinical (supervised patient care) and 50% research with publishable project assigned at beginning of rotation.
Course Objectives:
Describe skin lesions and give a reasonable differential diagnosis for common skin conditions. Have an in-depth knowledge (at the level of a first-year dermatology resident) of one targeted area of dermatology. This includes understanding the clinical conditions, basic science relative to the pathogenesis of those conditions, and first-line therapies for those conditions.

Fourth-year standing. 140.01 Clinical Dermatology is required. Enrollment is limited. UCSF medical students planning a career in dermatology only.

140.08: SPECIALTIES

An advanced clinical dermatology elective (not research) in one of five subspecialty areas of dermatology. The student will have a supervised patient care experience with targeted faculty. Upon completion, students will have in-depth clinical knowledge equivalent to a first-year dermatology resident, which includes understanding clinical conditions, basic science relative to disease pathogenesis and first-line therapies for conditions in the chosen dermatologic subspecialty.
Course Objectives:
1. Take a complete targeted history and perform a complete physical exam at the level of a first-year dermatology resident in one subspecialty area of dermatology.
2. Give a complete differential diagnosis for the common presentations in one area of subspecialty dermatology.
3. Understand the diagnostic algorithm for one area of complex dermatology (psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, cutaneous oncology, pediatric dermatology, autoimmune dermatology, inpatient dermatology, hair and nail diseases).
Team Composition:
During this two week elective, students are supervised by a dermatology resident and 2-3 dermatology attendings who specialize in the chosen area.
