  Family Practice Inpatient Service

The Family Practice Inpatient Service (FPIS) is a non-geographic, adult medical service providing acute inpatient care. Patients are admitted from the FHC, the Primary Care Network Clinics of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH), the San Francisco Community Consortium Clinics, and from the SFGH Emergency Department.

The FPIS is staffed by four R1s, two R2s, two R3s, one chief resident, and two attending physicians. A clinical pharmacist, pharmacy students, and one to two medical students are also on the service at most times. The average daily census is 20 patients, with more than 1,200 patients discharged per year.

FPIS patients present with a range of medical problems, as well as gynecologic diseases, surgical illnesses, neurological problems, or dermatologic illnesses.
