Year 2

Critical Care Medicine (4 Weeks)

Residents participate in a rotation in the SFGH Medical Intensive Care Unit.  They work in a team that includes four PGY3 and two PGY1 internal medicine residents.  They are on call for a 24-hour period every third day and are responsible for evaluation and management of new patients and the on going care of patients in the MICU.  They are supervised by a PGY3, by the ICU Fellows, and by attending staff from the Department of Medicine.

Family Medicine Block (2 Weeks)

During this time, residents concentrate on outpatient family medicine.  They participate in several curricular seminars developed by our faculty:  Family Medicine Seminars, Family Oriented Outpatient Medicine, Community Oriented Primary Care, and the Family Care Unit.

Family Practice Inpatient Service (8 Weeks)

Residents have primary responsibility for the care of hospitalized adults. The service is composed of two teams, each of which includes two PGY1’s, one PGY2, one PGY3, and one family physician faculty member. Upper level residents are on-call every fourth night. A night shift resident helps with admissions beginning at nine pm. First-year residents admit every fourth day—they are on overnight call three times per rotation and on “short call” (when they go home at 9 pm) four times per rotation.

Obstetrics (4 Weeks)

This rotation is at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Residents are responsible for management of normal and high risk labor, delivery and postpartum care.  Residents work 12-hour shifts and take call 2 – 3 times per week.  Residents work with FP residents from several other programs in the area, and are supervised by FP/OB fellows, PGY3 and PGY4 OB residents, and OB Attending's.

Orthopedics (4 Weeks)

This rotation includes time at experiences in a musculoskeletal injuries clinic, pediatric orthopedics, casting, and in an orthopedic private practice.  Residents reinforce their knowledge and skills in musculoskeletal medicine and develop new skills in the treatment of acute injuries.

Pediatric Clinic (4 Weeks)

Residents participate in the evaluation of children presenting with acute and urgent problems at SFGH’s Children’s Health Center.  They work alongside pediatric residents and upper level Family Practice Residents, and participate in daily didactic session on primary care and urgent care topics in pediatrics. Residents work 10-hour shifts.

Surgery (8 Weeks)

Residents participate in this rotation at Summit Medical Center in Oakland.  They work under the direct supervision of surgical attending staff.  The focus is on gaining technical skills to first assist in the operating room and on preoperative and post-operative care.
