Year 1

Emergency Medicine (4 Weeks)

Residents care for patients presenting to the SFGH Emergency Department, a Level I Trauma Center that also provides emergency care for patients in the Community Health Network.  Residents work 12 hour shifts under the direct supervision of Emergency Medicine physicians.  They participate in care of patients in both the medical and surgical areas of the Emergency Department.

Evidence Based Medicine (2 Weeks)

This tutorial introduces residents to the skill necessary to critically appraise clinical information and to utilize the numerous electronic resources available for this purpose.  Residents work closely with Dr. Dave Thom and with Julie Haugen, a clinical librarian, to prepare several presentations, including a journal club.  Our program's EBM web site will give you a closer look at this curriculum.

Family Practice Inpatient Service (16 Weeks)

Residents have primary responsibility for the care of hospitalized adults. The service is composed of two teams, each of which includes two PGY1’s, one PGY2, one PGY3, and one family physician faculty member. Upper level residents are on-call every fourth night. A night shift resident helps with admissions beginning at nine pm. First-year residents admit every fourth day—they are on overnight call three times per rotation and on “short call” (when they go home at 9 pm) four times per rotation.

Geriatrics (4 Weeks)

During this rotation, residents learn about the essentials of geriatrics and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in the care of older patients.  Their rotation is based at On Lok, a community-based program that serves as an alternative to nursing home care. They work directly with Dr. Ina Li, a family physician and geriatrician, participating in patient evaluations and interdisciplinary team conferences

Obstetrics (8 Weeks)

Residents work in SFGH’s Birth Center, primarily 12-hour shifts (days or nights) with some 24-hour shifts on weekends.  They have primary responsibility for management of the labor and delivery deck, including evaluation of new patients, under the supervision of second and fourth year OB residents and an OB attending.

Pediatric Clinic (4 Weeks)

Residents participate in the evaluation of children presenting with acute and urgent problems at SFGH’s Children’s Health Center.  They work alongside pediatric residents and upper level Family Practice Residents, and participate in daily didactic sessions on primary care and urgent care topics in pediatrics. Residents work 12 hour shifts.

Pediatric Nursery (4 Weeks)

In this level III nursery with NICU capacity, Family Practice Residents work alongside their pediatric colleagues to provide care for healthy newborns, and to diagnose and manage common complications in the neonatal period.  They also develop skills in resuscitation of newborns in the delivery room.

Pediatric Ward (4 Weeks)

Residents spend this rotation on the SFGH Pediatrics Inpatient Service, where they develop knowledge and skills in diagnosing and retreating hospitalized children. Overnight call duty is every fourth night until 1:00 pm post-call.  Residents also attend the daily didactic sessions on pediatric topics.
