The Many Faces of Trauma Care
Trauma is the third leading cause of death in the US and the leading cause of death in young people (ages 1 – 44.) People with severe injuries have a better chance to live if they receive surgical care within 1 hour of injury.
The San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center is the only trauma center for the City and County of San Francisco. As the lead hospital for the city's Emergency Medical Services Trauma System, it functions as an emergency resource for over 1.5 million people. |
Level 1 trauma center designation is the highest level of verification available.
In this role, SFGH must provide comprehensive
care to injured patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This necessitates
a wide range of resources, including in-house trauma surgeons, emergency
medicine physicians, anesthesiologists, promptly available specialists in
a wide range of disciplines, and highly trained nursing staff. UCSF physicians serving at San Francisco General Hospital play a crucial role in the continuum of trauma care.
The center also conducts trauma research and is actively involved in education
and community outreach activities. It is one of only 11 injury prevention
programs funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (see
"Prevention" below.)
