| I was born in Newark, New Jersey and, having grown up in New Jersey,
all new locations look pretty exciting to me. I graduated from Livingston
High School in 1979 and spent my undergraduate years in the six-year
medical curriculum at Boston University as part of the accelerated
dental school program. I left this program after five years to attend
Hahnemann University School of Medicine in order to pursue my career
aspiration of being a craniofacial trauma surgeon. I matched in otolaryngology/head
and neck surgery at St. Louis University which has a great reputation
for trauma surgery and facial plastic surgery. I was fortunate to
have as Chairman, Michael D. Maves, M.D., M.B.A., who was a phenomenal
influence on me.
After residency, I worked in a private practice affiliated with
Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, but I discovered that I missed
the pace, variety, and teaching opportunities afforded by an academic
position. I was fortunate to be offered an entry level position
in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at UCSF
in 1993 by Dr. Robert Schindler, and I have been thrilled with my
career at UCSF and San Francisco General Hospital since then. It
is at SFGH that I am still able to pursue my interest in craniofacial
trauma and reconstructive surgery. I am currently an Associate Professor
in the Department and the Chief of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck
Surgery at San Francisco General Hospital.
From an education perspective, I have a broad experience in the
University. I have been on the Admissions Committee for the School
of Medicine for six years and have been in charge of the Resident
Selection Committee for our department for seven years. I have served
as the Program Director for our residency program and am an auditor
of the San Francisco Matching Program which runs the match for five
specialties. I am involved in the committees for our national organization
that develop in-service and Board exam testing material. I work
educationally with students from all years of the medical school,
with interns in general surgery, residents in otolaryngology/head
and neck surgery, and residents from family and community medicine
and internal medicine.
Outside of the hospital, I have many interests. I have been married
to Jennifer Massey for twelve years. Jennifer has a background in
marketing and journalism and was educated at the University of Missouri,
Columbia in that field. She used to be the vice president of marketing
for the San Francisco Design Center, but left that job so that she
could mentor our daughters, Madeleine and Adrienne. Madeleine is
a 4 year old redhead who is currently working on alphabet mastery.
When not changing Adrienne's diapers, I enjoy sailing. I have a
Pearson 365 ketch which I keep in Tiburon and which is named Fat
Chance. This is my father's boat, which we have had in our family
for 25 years and have cruised extensively from New York to Nantucket.
I do not play golf and, unlike other mentors, do not have any pets.
