| Born in Cairo, Egypt, I left for the United Kingdom when I was
six years old. I lived there through secondary school at Dollar
Academy, Scotland, after which my family and I moved to Atherton,
on the Peninsula.
I attended Stanford for undergraduate and medical school, did my
residency in orthopaedics at University of Washington, and did pediatric
orthopaedics at Harvard.
I am a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon with special interests in
hip and spinal deformities. I also wrote a book on the history of
medical language in orthopaedics, born of an interest in the history
of medicine and my undergraduate degree in ancient Greek and Latin.
I am passionate about education in the broad sense. This includes
teaching (the "science") as well as inspiring the next
generation of physicians never to lose sight of the humanity and
dignity (the "art") that make medicine so fulfilling and
so noble.
