The Scientific Leadership and Management Skills Course was developed in 2004-2005 as a collaboration between the UCSF Office of Postdoctoral Education, The Office of Career and Professional Development, the Center for Health Professions, and the J. David Gladstone and Buck Institutes.

This two-day, intensive course is designed to give new and future PI's the awareness, skills and tools needed to become better leaders and managers within a research unit. The course was modeled after the "Course in Scientific Management" developed by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. Now in its fourth year, this course has offered valuable skills to over 300 participants and has be featured in Cell and Science.

The next course will be held in summer/fall 2010.

This course provides training in:

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT IN SCIENCE
Includes instruction from the eminent specialist in this field, Dr. Ed O'Neil.  Dr. O'Neil has used his unique leadership development curriculum to train scientists at Genentech, the NIH, and HHMI.  Prior to the course participants are asked to complete two on-line diagnostic tools that are used to assess and improve leadership and communication skills. During the course, small group work with Dr. O'Neil's team of leadership specialists provides guidance for participants to realize tangible improvements in their skills.

CRITICAL MANAGEMENT SKILLS FOR FUTURE AND NEW PI's
Includes training by successful faculty members and top
administrators from UCSF, The J. David Gladstone Institutes, and the Buck Institute for Age Research, and other Bay Area Universities who will provide insight, advice, and concrete tools for improving your skills in the following areas:
