Donor Support for Educational
Technology

The Class of 1952 supported the development of a loaner
laptop program for use in the the medical school curriculum. The mobile
computing program seeks to facilitate teaching and learning through
improved access to technology. The program includes 25 Dell Latitude
laptop computers, complete with DVD drives and built-in wireless Internet
access for use anywhere on campus. Since the launch of the program in
2002, students and faculty have completed more than 3000 hours of instruction
and learning through this program.
The Class of 1952 also funded the implementation of the iROCKET patient
encounter system. This PDA-based solution allows students to efficiently
capture patient encounters and experiences and to link these encounters
to learning objectives in the clinical core curriculum. We are expanding
this system to provide PDA-based learning content throughout the medical
school experience.
MissingLink, a student
developed site that guides medical students to health education related
web-based resources was supported by funds from the Class of 1961.
MissingLink's primary tool is a search engine that identifies proven web-based
resources of value to medical student education. MissingLink allows users
to search for resources based on discipline or keyword and results are
sorted from the highest to lowest rating. Visitors can also browse by
discipline or categories based on the UCSF medical school curriculum.
MissingLink contains more than 400 educational resources classified into
more than 90 categories.
