UCSF, Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley will partner at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, a new biomedical science research center in San Francisco. The Biohub will be led by co-presidents Joseph DeRisi, PhD and Stephen Quake, PhD from Stanford.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $24 million over five years for a new 'blue-sky' bioengineering center based at UCSF. The Center for Cellular Construction will be directed by Wallace Marshall, PhD and co-directed by Wendell Lim, PhD and Zev Gartner, PhD.
The Northern California Institute for Research and Education received a five-year award to fund a critical third phase of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) led by Michael Weiner, MD, including $20 million from the Foundation for National Institutes of Health and $40 million from the National Institute on Aging at the NIH.
UCSF received an NSF Inclusion Across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science (INCLUDES) planning grant for the Bay Area Regional Collaboration to Expand and Strengthen STEM (RECESS), an educational partnership proposed as part of the Differences Matter initiative.

Beginning October 3, UCSF IT is enhancing UCSF Box to allow you to store files containing PHI or other restricted data. To create this new Secure Box, UCSF IT integrated CipherCloud, which automatically encrypts files that contain UCSF PHI, and also provides a secure folder where you can store any sensitive files.
Honors and Appointments
Bruce Alberts, PhD, received the Lasker~Koshland Special Achievement Award in Medical Science from the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation, one of the highest honors in biomedicine.
Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) news: Edward Chang, MD, Adam Frost, MD, PhD and Markus Müschen, MD, PhD, were named HHMI Faculty Scholars.

Michelle Albert, MD, MPH, will receive the Women in Cardiology Mentoring Award from the Council on Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association.
Allan Basbaum, PhD, FRS, is the current co-chair of the Federal Pain Research Strategy Steering Committee.
Alisa Gean, MD, was the top individual fundraiser in the US for the AVON 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer.
Lawrence Green, MPH, DrPH, will receive the Sedgwick Memorial Medal for Distinguished Service in Public Health, the oldest and most prestigious award bestowed by the American Public Health Association.
Jin Kim, PhD, won the inaugural UCSF Postdoc Slam competition. Navneet Matharu, PhD, received both the runner-up and people's choice awards.
Walter Miller, MD, received the Fred Conrad Koch Lifetime Achievement Award from the Endocrine Society, its highest honor.

Rabindra Kundu, MD, program director of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at UCSF Fresno, has passed away.
