International architecture firm Stantec Inc. has been selected to design the new, state-of-the-art Precision Cancer Medicine Building (PCMB) to integrate research and world-class patient care on the Mission Bay campus.

The Health Professions Education Foundation (HPEF) improves access to health care in underserved areas of California by providing scholarship and loan repayments to health professional students and graduates who are dedicated to working in those areas. Information on upcoming annual application cycle dates and programs can be found on the HPEF website.

NIH Funding Opportunity: UC Center for Accelerated Innovation Tech Grants - Letters of intent are highly recommended and due on Nov. 18; pre-application submission period is Dec. 5-9. Read the NHLBI RFA.

UCSF researchers & clinicians: Johns Hopkins University researchers (Kieren Marr, MD, Supriya Munshaw, PhD, Phillip Phan, PhD) are conducting a survey among the leading US research universities to better understand pathways to successfully creating products and services from discoveries. UCSF will receive a confidential benchmark report with the results based on participation (participants may also enter a raffle for an Apple Watch); responses are anonymous and results will only be reported in aggregate (without identifying institutions).

New leadership for the University of California Global Health Institute: Founding Director Haile T. Debas, MD, is now director emeritus and Thomas Coates, PhD, of UCLA, will succeed Dr. Debas as director. UCSF's Craig Cohen, MD, and Patricia Conrad, DVM, PhD, of UC Davis, have been named as co-directors.

Department Chairs Robert Hiatt, MD, PhD (Epidemiology & Biostatistics), Stephen Hauser, MD (Neurology), Linda Giudice, MD, PhD (Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences), Donna Ferriero, MD (Pediatrics), and Ronald Arenson, MD (Radiology and Biomedical Imaging), have announced their intention of stepping down within the next year.

Passings

Julian "Bill" Parer, MD, PhD, longtime OBGYN faculty member and fellowship director, has passed away.

Theodore Shrock, MD, former chief medical officer of UCSF Medical Center, Department of Surgery chair and a renowned endoscopic surgeon, has passed away.

John Snyder, MD, a faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition from 1991 to 2007, has passed away.
