Vice President Joe Biden and Jill Biden, PhD, visited UCSF and held a roundtable discussion with UCSF leaders and experts as part of the National Cancer Moonshot Initiative.
HONORS & APPOINTMENTS
Shary Eiser, RN, S. Andrew Josephson, MD, Wylie Liu, MPA, MPH, and Mike McCune, MD, PhD, are this year’s recipients of the Holly Smith Award for Exceptional Service to the School of Medicine. They will be honored at the Salute to Excellence reception in May.
UCSF won seven Council for Advancement and Support of Education awards, in recognition of the best in communications at higher education institutes.
The recipient of the inaugural Donald Seldin - Holly Smith Award for Pioneering Research from the American Society for Clinical Investigation is Christian Schaaf, MD, PhD, of Baylor College of Medicine.

Hal Chapman, MD, Brad Backes, PhD, Dean Sheppard, MD, and Bill DeGrado, PhD, founded Pliant Therapeutics, a startup company to develop new treatments for fibrotic diseases based on discoveries from their labs at UCSF. The company has secured $45 million in initial funding from the venture capital firm Third Rock Ventures.

In the first UCSF teach-in since the Iraq War, Soledad O’Brien delivered a keynote speech on injustice and health and moderated an incisive panel discussion on race and racism within health with Suzanne Barakat, MD, Phuoc Le, MD, MPH, Rena Pasick, DrPH, Howard Pinderhughes, PhD, and SOM students Sidra Bonner and Andrea Quinones-Rivera.
Laurence Finberg, MD, passed away in January. A pediatrician and a scientist, Dr. Fineberg was known for his contributions to the management of salt and water balance in children.
