In December, UCSF medical students united over 80 medical schools nationwide in a #WhiteCoats4BlackLives “die-in” demonstration to protest racism and police brutality. Inspired by the students’ action, interim dean Bruce Wintroub re-focused the School of Medicine leadership retreat to talk about how race and racism affects health care and UCSF.

HONORS & APPOINTMENTS
Gordon Fung, MD, PhD, won the Adarsh S. Mahal, MD Access to Health Care and Disparities Award from the California Medical Association Foundation.
Peter Hunt, MD, and Mallory Johnson, PhD, have been awarded the AIDS Research Institute Award for Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring.
Jonathan Weissman, PhD, won the inaugural National Academy of Sciences Award for Scientific Discovery.
Sandy Butler, the original NewsLinks editor, as well as the endowed chairs coordinator and communications coordinator for the School of Medicine, has passed away. Sandy joined UCSF in 2007 and the dean’s office in 2008, and was a trusted and valued team member and a cherished friend for many.
