School Names King as Chair of Department of Medicine

School Announces Creation of the UCSF Institute of Molecular Medicine
09.19.07

UCSF School of Medicine Dean David Kessler, Executive Vice Dean Keith Yamamoto, and Department of Medicine Chair Talmadge King have announced the creation of the UCSF Institute of Molecular Medicine, a new interdepartmental program that will enhance the ability of clinical departments to recruit and retain outstanding physician-scientists.

The Institute will follow the visionary Program in Basic Sciences (PIBS) model, which initiated the remarkable expansion of research and training programs across the UCSF basic science community. The IMM will foster interdepartmental collaboration, allowing individual departments to access resources that will promote the education, recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty.

The major goals of the Institute are:
  • To take the lead in the training of physician-scientists
  • To become a vehicle through which the scientific and space needs for physician-scientists can be better coordinated
  • To support the recruitment of at least three superb physician-scientists per year over the next several years
  • To be part of the planning for new disease-related initiatives to be undertaken at Mission Bay.

The Institute will be led initially by Don Ganem, MD, Director of the Molecular Medicine Program; Art Weiss, MD, PhD, Chief of the Division of Rheumatology; and Shaun Coughlin, MD, PhD, director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute. It will begin with substantial funding from the School of Medicine and the strong support of both the School and the Department of Medicine.
