Peter R. Carroll, MD, has been appointed as Director of Clinical Services and Strategic Planning of the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center and Associate Dean of the School of Medicine, Dean Kessler announced today.

In his new position, Dr. Carroll will focus on expanding the existing high-quality, patient-centered clinical programs at the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center and, in parallel, establish a clinical delivery system able to support and execute translational research.

Dr. Carroll has been on the faculty at UCSF since 1986 and has served as the Chair of the Department of Urology since 1996. He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including most recently the Ken and Donna Derr-ChevronTexaco Distinguished Professorship in Prostate Cancer. He has also been Surgeon-in-Chief at the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center since 2003. He is an international expert on the diagnosis and management of urological malignancies.

Dr. Carroll's research focuses on the study and management of urologic cancers, on innovative methods of urinary tract reconstruction, and on the impact of cancer detection and treatment on quality of life. He is the co-leader of the Prostate Cancer Program at the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center; the co-PI of the NIH/UCSF Prostate Cancer SPORE; and he leads the NIH Molecular Effects of Nutritional Supplements prostate study.

He received his undergraduate training at the University of California, Berkeley. After graduating with honors from Georgetown University School of Medicine, he came to UCSF for his general surgery training and urology residency. He completed a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center before returning to join the faculty in the Department of Urology at UCSF.
