11.28.05

Dr. Ruth Greenblatt (r) with Dr. Renee Navarro

School of Medicine Professor Ruth Greenblatt has been awarded a prestigious Women in Medicine Leadership Development Award by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The award was presented at the AAMC's annual meeting in early November in Washington DC.

"Dr. Greenblatt has served as a role model and mentor for many men and women at UCSF," declared the nomination committee. "She has spent her life working to better understand science and to improve the status of women."

Dr. Greenblatt is an attending physician at the UCSF Medical Center AIDS Clinic, and professor for infectious diseases. In 1990, she became co-director of the San Francisco STD Training Center through a CDC funded grant.

She is the Director, Women's Specialty Program, which is a primary care program for women living with HIV infection. She has continued to work collaboratively with a broad number of professionals to further the scientific investigation of HIV as it affects women and improve their care.

Dr. Greenblatt has been a leader within the University for the status of women and served as the Chair of the Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Women, Chair of the Chancellor's Task Force on the Climate for Faculty and on the Committee on Equal Opportunity. Her role in the evaluation of the climate survey was instrumental in developing a set of recommendation to guide the Chancellors focus on the academic environment at UCSF. The resultant Council on Faculty Life is a key committee, of which she is a member.

The AAMC Women in Medicine Leadership Development Awards recognize individual and organizational contributions to advancing women leaders in academic medicine. Since the first award in 1993, these awards have recognized 15 individuals and 6 medical school based women in medicine programs.
