Working with industry is often a novel challenge for academic researchers, especially since the rules involved are different from those in academic institutions. But while the route to a successful collaboration can be complex and dotted with pitfalls, the potential rewards are considerable.
To help researchers be better prepared to work with industry, the Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI) at UCSF, in collaboration with members of the campus community led by Teri Melese, PhD, Matt Springer, PhD, and Erik Lium, PhD, have prepared a rich knowledge base of information.
The knowledge base is structured through a series of questions that introduce various aspects of working with industry to a UCSF faculty member. It gives a brief introduction to a comprehensive set of issues related to industry-sponsored research, with pointers to people, departments and other resources that can help provide more detail.
The knowledge base can be found at CTSI's Virtual Home for research. CTSI's Virtual Home is a constantly-expanding and updated web resource, designed to help those involved in clinical and translational research at UCSF find the resources, services and knowledge they need to be efficient, creative and collaborative in their work.
Resources include direct access to consultation services and additional knowledge bases across a range of subject matters, including biostatistics, research design, data management, community engagement, health policy, a search facility to identify research cores by location and type, and information about how to use CTSI's Clinical Research Centers at nine locations.
