One crucial part of these expanded training opportunities is the "Pathways to Discovery" program. Launched after the School of Medicine leadership retreat in 2006, which focused on education, the program aims to find new ways to foster inquiry, innovation, and discovery among students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty at UCSF.

"UCSF graduates who embody this ethos might become leaders and innovators as physicians and scientists, faculty members, public policy makers, public servants and government leaders", says Dina Gould Halme, PhD, director of science policy with the Dean's Office, who co-chairs of the Pathways to Discovery Task Force with Daniel Lowenstein, MD. "Our goal is to infuse every aspect of learning and practice with inquisitive thinking, innovation and discovery."
