The Team

Members of the Islet team are on call 24 hours a day and often are alerted in the middle of the night about the availability of a pancreas that meets the criteria for islet isolation. Once that call comes in, team members must rush to the facility and mentally and physically prepare themselves for what can be a six- to eight-hour process.

To assemble the Islet team, Szot recruited staff from other Islet facilities. These staff members were then trained in the equipment and protocols of the UCSF center.
