More
than 1 million Americans suffer from Type 1 diabetes,
also known as “juvenile diabetes;” some 30,000
new cases are diagnosed each year. In this type
of diabetes, the body’s immune system destroys
the body’s insulin-producing “islet” cells, making
it difficult to maintain stable blood sugar levels.
Most people with Type 1 diabetes treat their disease
by monitoring their blood sugar and injecting
themselves with insulin, as well as adjusting
their exercise and diet. But throughout their
lives, diabetes patients are at increasing risk
for life-threatening complications.
