Clean
Rooms
The
air inside most of the areas has just 100,000
particles per cubic foot (as compared to TK particles
per cubic foot in normal air). In other areas,
including the suite where the actual islet isolation
takes place, the air has just 10,000 particles
per cubic feet. To accomplish this, the facility
built 86 HEPA filters into the ceiling (more HEPA
filters, in fact, than any other laboratory facility
in the world)—and the team members have to wash
the walls, ceilings, and floors quarterly. (They
do a “triple wash” once a year.)
