ICPF originated in 2000, soon after UCSF recruited Dr. Jeffrey Bluestone, Ph.D., the A.W. and Mary Margaret Clausen Distinguished Professor and Chairman of the UCSF Diabetes Center. Dr. Bluestone, who was among the early researchers exploiting islet transplantation in animal models of diabetes, had a vision to create the first, specialized human islet facility in Northern California. This “GMP” facility was established in 2002 to provide human islets for clinical transplantation in select patients with hard to control diabetes.
