2009 School of Medicine Summer Photo Contest: "Learning Moments" 08.24.09 Education, the primary mission of the UCSF School of Medicine, takes place in many settings: in classrooms, in clinics, in the community, on campus, and abroad. This year's School of Medicine Photo Contest challenged our photographers to visually capture some of these "learning moments." Many excellent images were submitted and anonymously reviewed by a jury that included editors, photographers, and designers. Photos were given points for originality, visual and emotional impact, and technical quality. The winners are: First Prize: "MedTeach" Photo: Patricia S. Caldera PhD

Second Prize: "Anesthesia" ![]() A fourth-year UCSF medical student (left) talks with an anesthesia resident (right) during a video-assisted thoracoscopy, a procedure to examine the anatomy of the lungs with a small camera inserted between the ribs. The anesthesiology rotation is a popular experience among UCSF medical students, as it allows an intricate understanding of pharmacology and physiology in action, while emphasizing key life-saving skills such as airway management. Dedicated resident-teachers such as the one pictured here are critical to the medical student education during the clinical years. -- Harras Zaid -- Katherine Nielsen A big thank-you to Stephanie Belger, Dina Halme, David Hand, Susan Merrell and Cynthia Milionis for their time, service and thoughtfulness in choosing the winning images. |
