2007 Dean's Office Photo
Contest
08.27.2007
The theme set this year for the second School of Medicine Dean's Office Summer Photo Contest was the UCSF tagline advancing health worldwide™. Some three dozen submissions illuminated the diversity of experiences and activities of our students, faculty and staff abroad.
All submitted photos were judged anonymously by a jury that included members of the Dean's Office and Public Affairs. The judges were looking for images that portrayed the action of meeting health care needs. Points were awarded for originality, visual and emotional impact, and technical quality.

Studying abroad with the CIMAS foundation in Ecuador, I spent most of my spring internship in the town of Tabacundo, shadowing physicians and helping with a national vaccination campaign. One afternoon, we received a call about a man who had fallen sick over the course of a few months and did not have enough money to seek medical attention. We made a house call and saw that his tumor had grown to the point of sealing his eyes shut and disfiguring his mouth. The medical team pooled their resources and used their contacts in Quito to arrange for him to be evaluated and treated.

In the summer of 2007, I had the pleasure of traveling with the UCSF Proctor Foundation team to Ethiopia to take part in a 10-year randomized controlled trial looking to eliminate trachoma infections through mass antibiotic treatments. Trachoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. This photo shows me working with my Ethiopian counterpart Tesfy to collect conjunctival samples from villagers. The collaboration between Ethiopian health workers and the UCSF Proctor team members fostered great teaching and information-sharing, not only about trachoma but also each others' cultures, which made this experience truly rewarding.

While on a Rotary International exchange in Agra, India, promoting post-polio sequelae surgery, I responded to the local request for relief from the Gujarat Earthquake. I was accompanied by Vikas Patel, then a UCSF orthopedic resident, whose parents were visiting Deesa, India, the site of the first standing hospital outside of the epicenter. The photo was taken in a relief tent, as many people were afraid to go into buildings because of the aftershocks. The woman in the picture, like many, had a crush injury from falling objects.
