Niemann-Pick Disease
Type B Niemann-Pick disease: The Lungs Lung disease is frequently the most disabling aspect of type B NPD.
Because of the build-up of Niemann-Pick cells, the lungs are unable
to fill completely with air. This difficulty is usually noticed in childhood.
Shortness of breath may occur, especially after physical exertion, and
oxygen use may be necessary. People with type B NPD are also susceptible
to life-threatening lung infections, such as pneumonia. The lung function
in type B NPD becomes worse over time; the speed of this decline varies
somewhat from person to person. People with type B NPD may be referred
to a pulmonologist (lung doctor).
