Lewis L. Lanier, PhD, has been appointed director of the George Williams Hooper Research Foundation, an organized research unit within UCSF. He will assume his new position on July 1. Larisa Kure, MPA, will manage the financial and administrative responsibilities of the Foundation.

Dr. Lanier is currently the chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology; an American Cancer Society professor; leader of the Cancer, Immunity, and Microenvironment Program of the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center; and the J. Michael Bishop, MD, Distinguished Professor in Microbiology and Immunology. Ms. Kure is the department manager of the Department of Cell & Tissue Biology in the School of Dentistry and of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology.

Dr. Lanier will succeed J. Michael Bishop, MD, professor and chancellor emeritus, who is stepping down after 35 years as director of the Hooper Foundation. During his tenure as director, Dr. Bishop also served as chancellor of UCSF for 11 years.
