What is Ilios?

Ilios is the electronic hub for curriculum planning and oversight at UCSF's School of Medicine. While in the midst of dramatic curriculum change, we recognized the need for a powerful tool that would both facilitate communication among course designers and serve as a development forum

Ilios is more than a database of curricular details. With its intuitive interface and smooth navigation, it offers faculty, students, and staff a means of tracking course information and generating comprehensive reports about the integration of themes, concepts, and learning objectives.

Ilios is a highly flexible, Web-based application that truly supports the innovative and interdisciplinary nature of the new curriculum.

Integration and Reporting

Curriculum designers can review course and session information quickly, examining topics in great detail in order to fine-tune content, close gaps, and eliminate redundancies so that the curriculum functions as an organic whole.

Ilios produces thorough reports about curricular content in the Essential and Clinical Core. Search results include disciplines, learning objectives, faculty name, and MeSH keywords. Ilios also generates and organizes data for surveys like the LCME self-study.

Learning Materials and Cases

Ilios's learning materials database greatly enhances access to teaching modules, including images, video, and Web tutorials.

The case tool allows for the tracking, management and integration of cases across the required curriculum.

Syllabus and Archiving

Ilios facilitates syllabus production by automating the creation of the first page of each syllabus chapter. Administrators no longer need to enter basic session information twice.

Ilios tracks curricular revisions from year-to-year, allowing course planners to identify changes in block courses and in clerkships.

Collaboration and Security

Ilios is not merely a repository of curriculum data, because it creates a working space for the collective efforts of dozens of faculty, students, and staff.

The search engine is publicly available, making the curriculum available to all of UCSF, to prospective students, and to schools everywhere. Secure access is provided to course designers for editing content.
