
Thomas L. Hall, MD, DrPH

Dr. Tom Hall is a Lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
He received his undergraduate, medical and MPH degrees from Harvard
and his DrPH degree in International Health at Johns Hopkins. His early
academic career included eight years (1963-71) at Johns Hopkins where
he taught planning and international health, supervised student research,
and directed two national health manpower studies (Peru and Chile).
He then spent eight years (1971-79) at the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill where he was Professor in the Department of Health Administration
and Director of the Carolina Population Center, a large multi-disciplinary
center dedicated to teaching, research and service activities related
to population studies and family planning. Since leaving North Carolina
in 1979, Dr. Hall has directed a regional health planning agency in
Seattle, taught health planning at the University of Washington, and
served as Chief Medical Officer (Research) in the Health Services Research
and Development Unit of the New Zealand Department of Health. In 1988,
Dr. Hall joined CAPS where, in addition to his work in the postdoctoral
training program, he participates in the International Scholars Program
and the Technology Information Exchange program that CAPS conducts in
cooperation with Bay Area community-based organizations. His departmental
activities include: teaching two courses (Topics in International Health;
Epidemiology and Prevention of Violence); advising medical and other
students about international health placements, and supervising their
IH-related work. He is a frequent consultant to the World Health Organization
and the World Bank on human resource development projects.
