Site Description and History

Each spring, four 4th-year UCSF medical students are given the opportunity to visit Peking Union Medical College in Beijing, to complete eight weeks of observation on clinical rotations. Simultaneously, four PUMC students visit UCSF.

PUMC is China's elite medical school, founded in 1917 with strong support by the Rockefeller Foundation and the China Medical Board. It is affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, whose faculty teaches the biomedical sciences. The college accepts sixty students each year from a large pool of the top graduates of China's middle schools. The curriculum is eight years long, including two years of basic sciences (math, chemistry, physics, etc.) at the famous Peking University.

PUMC is situated in the center of Beijing with easy access to restaurants, movies and other entertainment. The hospital and teaching facilities are very good and most students and faculty understand at least some English and many are able to converse in English.

The UCSF-PUMC Exchange Program has been a part of the UCSF academic tradition for over ten years. This is a unique opportunity to gain insight into China's medical education and health care systems. Even more exciting is the opportunity to work, study and interact with some of China's best students and scientists, who are anxious to meet colleagues from the U.S. It is also an opportunity to learn to appreciate the cultural significance of traditional Chinese medicine.
