UCSF Institute for Global Health (IGH)
This research opportunity in the summer of 2006 is primarily geared towards
first-year students, but a fourth-year elective could be considered. Only
UCSF students are eligible. IGH has an ongoing research/training collaboration
with the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases (UHID) as well as
with the Andrija Stampar School of Public Health in Zagreb. Under this
program, a small pilot study of HIV-positive patients at the UHID is planned.
This will examine risk behavior as well as subtyping of the HIV to
determine the patterns and history of the nascent HIV epidemic in Croatia.
The student will assist in this study, and will work with infectious disease
specialists in Zagreb to understand global health challenges in the post-conflict
situation of the Balkans. In addition, the student will participate in
a short course training in clinical research to be provided by UCSF faculty
in Dubrovnik, Croatia. It is expected that the student will develop a
research protocol and apply for Dean's
Research Funds. There is no language requirement for this opportunity.
The assignment will begin in late June and finish in mid-August, with
a minimum commitment of six weeks. For further information, contact Tom
Novotny
at (415) 597-8201.

UNAIDS' mission is to lead, strengthen and support an expanded response
to HIV and AIDS that includes preventing transmission of HIV, providing
care and support to those already living with the virus, reducing the
vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV and alleviating the
impact of the epidemic. UNAIDS grants internships to post-secondary students
to allow them to participate in the work of UNAIDS and to enable them
to deepen their knowledge and understanding of UNAIDS' goals, policies
and activities. Applications for an internship can be sent at any time
but must be received at least three months before the beginning of the
internship. The recruitment of candidates is effected only through an
online application. Visit the UNAIDS
website for more information.
Duke Program on Global Policy and Governance
Deadline: November 27, 2006
Designed to equip students to join in the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis,
malaria, and other pressing health challenges, the Global Health Fellows
Program provides students with both an academic and experiential perspective
on how inter-governmental institutions, public-private partnerships, and
non-governmental organizations shape global health policy. The program
combines internships, program-sponsored events throughout the summer in
Geneva, and a course on global health issues. The program requires a minimum
commitment of eight weeks, including attendance in the “Health Policy
in a Globalizing World” course. Participants are responsible for
securing their own public policy internships in Geneva, though the Program
assists the students in securing them. The Program does not provide partial
or full scholarships. Each student is responsible for program fee, room
and board, airfare and other living expenses. More>
