Virus Protection

Sophos Anti-Virus for Desktops & Telecommuning
The School of Medicine Information Services Unit (ISU) implemented Sophos Anti-Virus as a quick and easy solution for protecting UCSF computers from infection by malicious viruses. Sophos Anti-virus includes the Sophos Remote Update for Windows, and the Desktop Client for Windows and Macintosh.

How it works
Every hour Remote Update logs into the School of Medicine's Sophos Central Install Directory (CID) to check for and install updates against new viruses. With this component on your desktop PC or laptop, you can access the CID for updates from any location where you can access the Internet, regardless of whether you are in the School of Medicine domain or on the UCSF network. This makes Sophos Anti-Virus an ideal choice for telecommuting or working from home.

Cost
Sophos Anti-Virus is site licensed to the University and is available at no cost to departments.

Steps

  1. Uninstall old anti-virus software.
  2. Obtain the Instructions for your Operating System (below).
  3. Click on the green icon below to download the installer.
  4. Follow the instructions. (Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view the installation instructions. It can be downloaded for free from the Adobe website.)
