Claudia Figallo
Claudia Figallo is a Social Work Associate with the AIDS Health Project who provides case management for low-income clients who are triply diagnosed with HIV, substance abuse and mental health issues. Claudia brought her client centered clinical skills, enthusiasm, and positive outlook to this small team. Claudia provides supportive counseling including the application of harm reduction and motivational interviewing skills, as well as substance abuse counseling and facilitation skills. As her nominator notes, “Claudia has a particular way of consistently working from a place of empathy and compassion even when clients or providers with whom she is working are angry or frustrated.”

Claudia is quick to consult and collaborate with other staff on the larger team, which includes the substance abuse program, psychiatry and dementia services. Claudia is seen by her clients, staff, and the AIDS service community as a forward thinking team member who is well respected and admired for her work.

Thomas Stuebner
Tom Stuebner became Director of the Francis J. Curry National TB Training Center in March 2005, a time of increasing budget cuts. His early duties included cutting back significantly on operation costs for their critical training programs without sacrificing the quality of this well respected national resource. As one of his nominators puts it, “Tom took over leadership of the Center at a difficult time and has changed the attitude of everyone who works here.”

Despite this challenging environment of change, the Center is prospering and training more TB program staff than ever and receiving consistently high rating in the course evaluations and needs assessment activities. He has fostered staff commitment and overall Center performance by recognizing individual talents of staff, encouraging staff to go beyond their comfort zone and instilling a spirit of cooperation among all stakeholders. As one of his nominators says, “Tom’s enthusiasm for work is contagious and I feel motivated to do whatever is necessary to continue our success.”

Mary Swenson
Mary Swenson is the residency coordinator of the Emergency Medicine Residency Training Program of the Fresno Medical Education Program. This program has grown significantly in the four years that Mary has been in her role. She is a consensus builder who has taken a creative approach to structuring a streamlined process of operations which has been critical to the program’s success.

As her nominator describes, Mary has acted with poise, demonstrating her expertise in dealing with complex issues in an environment of multiple stakeholders. She has displayed discretion, good judgment, and an ability to mediate and create compromises that advance that program’s goals. Mary has developed strong relationships with faculty, residents and staff of the Emergency Medicine program, all of whom count on her to be the person to “make things right.”

Eunice Woo
In her role as Computer Support Coordinator for the SOM Associate Dean’s Office at SFGH, Eunice Woo supports 10 departments with nearly 350 users. Eunice is known for her outstanding customer service skills and her spirit of cooperative team work. As an example, Eunice came up with the idea to hold a pizza lunch for the UCSF and the City and County technical staff to improve communication and relations. As her nominator notes, “this approach demonstrates how Eunice approaches challenges, directly, effectively and with simple elegant solutions in mind.”

In a recent anonymous online customer survey, Eunice’s clients echoed her nominators perceptions of her customer service skills. Comments from her clients included, “Eunice has been incredibly helpful whenever I have asked for assistance; Eunice has never let us down; and Eunice is wonderful, our department loves her.”
