Laurie L. Carlson
Since 2000, Laurie Carlson has been the Study Coordinator for the Solid Organ Transplantation in HIV: Multi-Site Study at UCSF. Laurie is the contact for many patients and their families who may be appropriate candidates for transplant. The process may be lengthy and there may be many providers involved, but it's Laurie who most often serves as guide and mentor. This involves not only helping patients make their way through the health, financial and emotional challenges of having HIV and needing transplant services, but also facilitating communication between many physicians providing the wide range of care that most patients need.

This may sound daunting but Laurie describes it as an honor to be able to play this role. When asked about a recent success, she described setting up an appointment and authorization for a patient who was getting frustrated by the complexity of our system. This may sound like a small thing but Laurie sees it as a critical part of her job. Laurie's respect for her patients is evidenced by her simple statement, I am proud to be the person that remembers their name.

Laurie has many years of varied experience related to transplants, both in direct care, research and in the pharmaceutical world. These are impressive credentials but Laurie sees her greatest impact in honoring her patients by treating them as individuals. Her nominator sums this up by saying, I can only hope that if I or someone I love is faced with a serious illness, we are fortunate enough to have such a knowledgeable, caring and special patient advocate on our medical team.

Catherine L. Devine
Cathy has been providing support to faculty in Radiology since she started working at UCSF in 2000. When Cathy was asked if she had a sense of why she was chosen for this recognition, she said, I truly have no idea. I am completely surprised. Well, to the folks in Cathy's work group, she was an obvious candidate for this special recognition.

As an example, a recently hired faculty supervisors stated, If Cathy had not been able to work so independently and expeditiously on the budgetary and administrative sections of his grant proposals, he never would have been able to submit them in such a short timeline. Another added, She requires no prodding and is always happy to help solve problems. Cathy is an absolute delight to work with.

The nominations received on Cathy's behalf had a common theme focused on Cathy's interpersonal strengths. For example, Cathy is exceptional and simply wonderful in her interpersonal interactions with everyone at every level, both within and outside UCSF. One of her nominators described Cathy as a consistently willing and dedicated mentor for both other staff as well as new faculty. Her nominators had no doubts as to why Cathy is a Great Person in the School of Medicine.

Timothy S. Greer
As the Manager of Computing and Networking Services at the SFGH Dean's Office, Tim Greer understands that teamwork and customer service are essential for success. In order to successfully update the networking infrastructure at SFGH, Tim and his team must collaborate with UCSF's facilities, purchasing, and the many departments represented at San Francisco General, and then at least as many folks at San Francisco's Department of Public Health. But they know the payoff is worth the effort. And when the installation is complete and the phones are not ringing, that's really great news.

As one of his co-workers notes, Tim isn't a role model, he's the poster child for teamwork and customer service. When we feel like we've reached our limit and need to say, No', Tim finds a way to say yes. He has taught me and everyone in our unit about saying Yes' to anyone at UCSF.

When asked about how it feels to be a great person', Tim said, I feel honored but really this is a reflection of everyone here. This recognition should really go to them. That message has clearly gotten through as reflected in his nominator's statement, Tim has guided our unit through a huge growth over the last five years and that growth has been built on his ability to inspire excellence in his employees.

Victor Hugo Guerrero
Since 2002, Dr Victor Guerrero has been working as a Clinical Fellow at the Center for Colorectal Surgery and the Center for Pelvic Physiology. At the end of this year, he will be returning to Mexico and his nominators are already anticipating missing him.

Dr. Guerrero's facility with technologies and his professionalism have contributed to the impression that he has made in his work environment. But it is his patience and his listening skills that seem to have really moved his peers and his patients. The words of his nominators speak for themselves. He's never too tired to listen to his patients. He never seems to be rushing, and yet gets everything done with dispatch. He generously gives his time to make sure that patients are well informed, well cared for and that staff are not over stressed or lacking the information needed to do their best work for their patients.

Another adds, I have never once heard him either refuse to help out or complain about the shameless way we've all come to depend on him. And finally one nominator sums up their sentiments by saying, It was an honor to have worked with him and I look forward to hearing about his achievements in the future of which I am sure there will be many.
