Research Description: Radiation injury to normal brain is a potential complication of brain tumor therapy. A number of critical factors influence if or how radiation injury is expressed, and we are studying some of them in our laboratory endeavors. We are addressing parameters such as dose and irradiated volume and are determining if the effectiveness of a given treatment scheme can be modified using specific enzyme inhibitors or other biologically active compounds. Further, we are studying specific aspects of the pathogenesis of radiation injury, and are interested in a population of glial progenitor cells that reside in the subependymal region of the brain and that undergo apoptosis at relatively low doses. We employ different animal models and quantify the development and extent of injury using advanced imaging techniques and quantify cellular responses in vivo using immunohistochemical strategies to combat a clinically significant problem.
