 Talke, Pekka

Degrees: M.D.
Department: Anesthesia and Perioperative Care
Research Center: Anesthesia Research
Keywords: anesthesia, alpha-2 agonists, sympathetic nervous system, hemodynamic, neurosurgery
Research Description: My research is focused on the pharmacology and physiology of highly selective alpha-2 agonists. Alpha-2 agonists have sedative, analgesic and sympatholytic effects, and at high concentrations they are complete intravenous anesthetics. Since the development of two new highly selective alpha-2 agonists (dexmedetomidine and mivazerol), they have become one of the most innovative and interesting areas in anesthesia research.

My research involves both clinical and basic science projects. In 1992, I conducted the first clinical studies in the United States with both dexmedetomidine and mivazerol. Since then, I have conducted clinical studies in patients and healthy volunteers which investigated the perioperative effects of alpha-2 agonists on the cardiovascular system (heart rate, blood pressure, heart rate variability, and baroreflex), sympathetic nervous system (plasma and urine catecholamines), intracranial pressure, oxygen consumption, thermoregulation, interaction of alpha-2 agonists with muscle relaxants, and cerebrospinal fluid pharmacokinetics. In the area of my anesthetic subspecialty, I am also conducting selected clinical studies in neurosurgical anesthesia.
