The Health Care System and Physician Leader

Goals

To provide UCSF students with an interest in health care systems and health policy additional expertise in:

  • the financing and organization of the health care system and their effects on patients, health care, physicians, and other health professionals
  • the political, economic, policy-making and cultural forces shaping the health system
  • the key ingredients necessary to make improvements in the health system from the level of the practice organization to national health policy

Topics

This AoC encompasses a very large variety of topics ranging from health economics and health care policy to physician practice leadership.

Coursework

Development of the AoC is in its early stages. Potential opportunities for student coursework have been identified within the existing curricula of the UCSF/UC Berkeley Joint Medical Program, the UCSF School of Nursing Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences minor in Health Policy, the UCSF Institute for Health Policy Studies, the UC Berkeley School of Public Health Division of Health Policy and Management, the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, and the UCSF SOM electives. The precise set of required courses has not yet been determined.

Requirements

  • The first step in getting involved in the AoC is to log onto iROCKET, go to the "Areas of Concentration" course, and fill out the Interest Form the AoC that interests you.
  • Contact one of the physician advisors to discuss your interests in the AoC
  • Declaration of the Physican Leader and Health Policy AoC
  • Enrollment in the Health Policy/Business of Medicine elective is advised, additional coursework requirements are pending.
  • Creation of a legacy project such as:
    • A quality improvement project
    • A health policy position/opinion paper
    • A health services research project
  • Make a substantial contribution to the AoC program
